You
want to eliminate all components outside of the flywheel before having
to remove it.
Wait until he sees what they want for a new stator to replace that rusty
old thing inside the flywheel with the rotten core that's shorting out the
magnetism. It's like replacing the V-8 in a Lexus....(d^
Been there, replaced that, 175 Merc V-6
Before he puts the new stator in it, make him coat all those exposed soft
iron cores around the flywheel with axle grease to stop the corrosion, LIKE
THE DAMNED MANUFACTURER SHOULD HAVE DONE AT THE FACTORY IN THE FIRST PLACE!
When the core rots, it expands with rust and pulls the coils apart.
Planned obsolescense?
Sorry you had such a hassle w/ the Merc, but OMC types are not as prone
to stator failure as the Mercury outboards. Parts are pretty easy to
come by, too. I think the problem will be found w/o pulling the flywheel.
