Departed Barn Island Sanctuary in Wequetequock and headed out to The
Race looking for fish in the Ranger. Had the student from yesterday
aboard just to show him some of the sights and how to rig different
lures and baits.
Got to the Race and decided that is was such a nice day that I'd head
over to Montauk for a little striper action. Made the trip in good
time, caught a few stripers in the 30" range and a few blue fish - one
of the blues was a big 'un - about 14 pounds. We were using Muzuri
popper shad imitations with red head - they performed very well.
Decided to head back to The Race to catch the ebb tide and did ok
again with the blues - not to much with the stripers though.
Broke from the Race and cruised to Westerly Light along the Westerly
Reef - stopped at Lord's Passage as the tide was turning and that's a
pretty good spot for stripers on the incoming tide. Nothing there,
but as we left, a charter boat trolling on the inside of the Reef
found what had to be a 40" bass just at the rip that was starting to
form.
Oh well.
Trolled along Westerly until the winds started to come up and it
started to get snarky, so we headed in to recover the boat at Barn
Island. Along the way right past Napatree Point half way to the
Stonington Breakwater a huge blue fish boil - must have been 25, 30
yards across - probably the third biggest boil I've seen. Tossed a
few poppers, got a few blues and called it a day.
I can't get over the performance of the 200 HO E-TEC on the Ranger. I
filled up on the way back - 3.5 gph including trolling and cruise -
never actually lit the engine up to WOT as 30 mph at 3800 was more
than comfortable enough.
That engine has seriously made the Ranger into a whole new boat.
Great day - had a ton of fun, the student had a lot of fun and we're
heading out in his Triton this weekend for BI and the SW ledge for
albie.
WHOO HOO!!!!
It doesn't get much better than that!
