Trim motor out on 1973 Johnson. Troubleshooting. UGH! When it rains it pours :(

I tried trimming up my Johnson yesterday with fresh batteries. It made
a brief Buzz and then stopped. Nothing! I used the screw at the bottom
to let pressure off and manually pulled the motor up.
I tested the voltage to the pump with a multimeter getting full volts
when switched. I fear it might be toast. I priced some online for
around 319.00 YIKES! Anywhere I can have it rebuilt? anything left
here to test.

If you are handy with this sort of thing, you may be able to fix it.
Here is what happened to mine, a 74 Evinrude, so probably the same.
There were, however, two types of pump/motor combos used for my motor,
but quite similar. One pump is triangular shaped, the other is round.
Mine was round. What was happening was this: There is a thermo cut off
inside the the motor, a set of points. These points opened up WAY too
soon for some reason, way before the motor was even warm. I took the
points out of the equation, and hooked to wires together. The pain is
getting the brush assembly back into place on the armature. I tied
them back with sewing thread, put the unit in place, except for enough
to get a knife in, cut the threads, and pull them out. It worked like
a champ.
