The original chain is a beautiful, precision made s.s. from

Wrong size? Just what am I missing here?

The length is fine but it doesn't mesh correctly with the vertical
gear that's being driven by the steering wheel. It's the wrong pitch
or something. The gear teeth keep the links too long as the gear rolls
over and then jerk free as they are pulled from underneath the bottom
of the gear. It's hard to explain, it's like each link is sticking and
wrapping around the gear instead of rolling off at 50%.
The original even has a lion stamped on every link, really cool
looking, wish it fit.

Hi,

Try measuring the roller diameter of the links with a vernier caliper:

for both new and old chain.

Maybe the new is slightly too large, compare #40 and #41 on this link

#41 has the same pitch but a slightly smaller roller diameter, as well
as less distance between the plates.
