The original chain is a beautiful, precision made s.s. from

Wrong size? Just what am I missing here?

The length is fine but it doesn't mesh correctly with the vertical
gear that's being driven by the steering wheel. It's the wrong pitch
or something. The gear teeth keep the links too long as the gear rolls
over and then jerk free as they are pulled from underneath the bottom
of the gear. It's hard to explain, it's like each link is sticking and
wrapping around the gear instead of rolling off at 50%.
The original even has a lion stamped on every link, really cool
looking, wish it fit.

If now too short:
Could you use the original near the compass, and use steel chains as
extensions? Could you use SS cable sa extension?

If a chain wrapped half way round a chainwheel sits against the wheel,
it fits.
If a chain sticks when leaving a chainwheel, it can be that the
chainwheel has worn hooked.
