Drums, guitar, keyboard, vocals......................
I still play my guitar & mandolin... in fact, just got my
electric (used to have several, now I'm an old fart with
just one electric & one acoustic guitar... don't even have a
12-string). Great accessories on the boat too. Any
instrument sounds sweeter and more resonant when played
during a lovely sunset in an isolated anchorage.
I'll bite. I have a cd on my boat with Red House by Jimi Hendrix. I like
to listen to it on my boat. It takes me back to my wannabe days. My
instrument? I was a bass player and a really good one. NOT! Competent,
but neither inspired nor natural-born. I gave it up 'cause one day I
realized I would never be as good as the Stones, The Who, and Led
Zeppelin. Still love my rock music and love listening to it on my boat.

Bill Wyman and John Paul Jones.....yawn. It's easy to outdo them. John
Entwhistle is another story. Like a few other great bass players (and
drummers), he had a unique way of slicing up time.
Bill Wyman is an awesome bass player, but not because he
plays a lot of flashy in-your-face notes. He's part of the
core, the foundation... it's not really a bass players job
to compete with the lead instruments & the front man (unless
of course, he *is* one or both). How about Gene Simmons? Did
an awesome job grabbing the spotlight.
John Entwistle is also a great musician, no doubt.
A few nominations for other great bass players
Phil Lesh
John Glascock
Bill Bruford
Paul McCartney
Les Claypool
Jack Bruce
Wilbur Bascomb (who?)
