Default racing etiquette

"You haven't won the race if in winning the race, you
have
lost the respect of your competitors."
- Paul Elvstrom, 4-time Olympic Gold Medalist

One of my favorite quotes.

It's on a plaque, hanging at the sailing center.

At Steve's sailing center? Have you sailed their new boat yet?

Elvstrom was amazing- he really invented modern sailboat
racing, or as my grandad would say, ruined it. Very few
people even had the idea of practicing, much less working
out new techniques & improving gear. What's more, he went
from class to class and country to country to both learn
from the best sailors there and to spread his ideas by
demonstrating his ability.

Buddy Melges is the only American that comes close... and
really came along after Elvstrom had already started the
revolution.

Another awesome sailor who doesn't get as much credit is
Jochen Schumann... although as Alinghi's sailing director,
one could say he's made his way to the top of the heap at last.
