Default OMC Cobra Stern Drive

Bill,
Thanks for the info. The plugs I am talking about are on the upper part of
the drive.
The one on the port side was removed when the boat was winterized (before I
bought it).
It screwed back in properly.
I did change the lower unit lubricant.
It fired up fine and shifted properly.
Should I be concerned?

Water plugs.

I am de-winterizing an OMC 5.8L with a Cobra drive.
There are three plugs on the upper drive. Two on the starboard side,

one
on
the port.
Are these just drain plugs for water or for lubricant?
I am familiar with Merc which don't have these extra plugs (threaded).
This my first Cobra.
Any help?
Thanks
Fitz

Do not touch or remove the large slotted plug on the port side of the
outdrive. That is normally covered by an emblem and not visible. If you
remove it, the threaded retainer inside the water passage will fall and

the
outdrive will have to be removed to re-install it. That plug covers a
drilled hole for a water passage that was done during the machining of the
raw casting.

On the starboard side, you should have 2 slotted gear oil plugs, if your
Cobra outdrive is between 1985 and 1995. You drain the oil thru the bottom
plug on the lower gearcase. To full the unit, install the bottom drain

plug
and fill thru the MIDDLE plug until the oil reaches the dipstick plug on

the
top of the drive. Get a service manual for outdrive for a better

explanation
and illustrations.
