The "Bayliner" thread (from the late 90's, I think) featuring Captain
Tostito's wild assertions and rabid brand loyalty lasted over a
year... and I don't know *how* many gazillion posts.....
It kept mutating. The primary participants were Someone Who Still Posts
Here Who Fills My Filters Till They Burst and Someone from a State in the
Great Midwest Whose State School Board Thought (until the recent election)
That They Are Scientists.
It got down-right nasty at times. It was when I was first getting into
newsgroups, using an IBM thinkpad with Windows--gosh, it might have still
been Windows 3.1--it was around 95 or 96 or 97--I know it was before 98,
because it was before my previous employer dumped my whole department.
It drove many good people away screaming frustration.
Almost every thread ended up getting hijacked by the feud, so it wasn't so
much a single thread, as a single feud that polluted the waters for a year
or more. If poster A responded to a thread about, oh, how to cook
biscuits while camped out on a boat, poster B would join in and the feud
would hijack that thread and eventually get around to Bayliners.
A candidate for the longest thread ever, anywhere, is probably the "Glass
Flows" thread from A. F. U. The subject line went through subtle
mutations, but it went on for ages, absolutes ages:
