My question is how far onto the shaft should the pulley be to get them
to align? It seems there has got to be a more solid way other than eye
balling it. Since there are 5 pulleys, eye-balling alignment isn't
easy.

I replaced the serpentine belt on my 98 2400 SCR last fall. Since they
no longer make the belt, I had to buy a conversion kit which required
replacing a pulley to accomodate the new belt (Sierra 18-15116). My
question is how do you know how far to put the pulley on? I was told to
put it on flush with the stem, but am having problems of the belt
misaligning.

Not sure I understand your question. But the pulley in question has to
align with the other ones.

The belt and the pulley should be grooved (4 or 5 grooves) and self align.
With the belt in place it should be obvious if the pulley in question is not
in alignment with the rest and to which direction it needs to go to be in
alignment.

Most manuals will tell you to use a straightedge.

....for adjusting belt tension.
