On what lake is Doolittle Island? What kinda stuff there?

It's a medium sixed island in the middle of Lake Murray, SC, just outside of
Columbia. Strange looking, in that it is 75% bare (no trees), while the
other islands on the lake are densly populated with trees. Now the island
is a Purple Martin refuge.

It was used in WWII for bombing practice for training the local base's B-25
crews. Doolittle's Raiders trained here, and used the island for practice
as well, hence the name. Legend has it (likely true) that there is still
some un-exploded ordinance around the island. There are a couple of B-25's
in the lake, and one was recovered a few years ago and is in the process of
being restored.

My dad, who enlisted at 17 at the very end of the war, recalls the B-25s
that flew training missions over this area back then. He was in the Navy,
and among other things, got to fly in a PBY.

Hmm... Navy, seaplanes, and lakes. Is the NG back on topic?. :-)
