I gave up golf 30-odd years ago, after playing one game on the course at
the Boca Raton Club. Part of a foursome, I played with rented clubs, and
shot a 90. When we got back to the clubhouse, I talked to the pro about
playing golf and he advised me to give it up right there and then,
because, he said, it would take me 10 years to duplicate my beginner's
luck.

Not bad, what did you shoot on the back nine??
Hehehe.
I used to have the card, signed by the three guys I played with, and the
pro in the golf shop. I actually shot a three on one of the par five
holes. It was the fluke of a lifetime. My second shot went to the top of
the green and there must have been some sort of "groove" there because
when I hit the ball with the putter, it rolled right into the cup.
Anyway, after that, I hung up my rented clubs.
I have a retired uncle who plays golf three days a week down in south
Florida. He's in his 80's. He plays the front nine one day, the back
nine the next. The kicker is, he walks the courses and uses a handcart
for his clubs. He moved to Florida after he retired so he could play
golf. When he played seriously, he shot in the low to mid 70's.

Actually, in this case, I was laughing with you, not at you. I still
remember my first outing of golf. It was on an Army sponsored course.
When I came in and back to the barracks, one of the older guys asked
what I shot. "73" I proudly announced and he said thats great, how
long have you been playing. I told him it was the first time, then it
took awhile for the fact that I only played 9 holes to come out.....
