Default steering lockup; how to prevent

I have a 115hp Evinrude on a 17' cc.

Because my boat sits around for periods during the offseason, it seems
like everytime I get in it the steering is stuck tight.

OK. I know one preventative is to go out regularly and run the wheel from
lock to lock. Noted and will do.

What else can I do to help prevent it taking a "set", and locking up?

There is/was a company selling a nut with grease fitting for the steering
tube. greaseing this point pushes water out of the tube . I've installed a
grease fitting for my mercruiser I/O and I use the outdrive grease (plastic
and rubber safe) mixed with graphite. The graphite reduces the viscosity of
the grease and makes steering easier when cold. Drill a hole and tap it out
then clean all metal particles. Screw the grease fitting in and grease.
