Merc shifters work by briefly cutting the ignition when you take them
out of gear. This releases the pressure on the input shaft allowing
the gears to come apart. It's a real rube goldburg but it works. The
interrupt switch is located on a plate wher the shift cable connects to
the smaller cable going out to the outdrive. Usually bolted to the
side of the engine or somewhere in the vicinity of the transom near the
outdrive. When out of adjustment they can affect the ignition.
Adjusting them is a real pain and you really need to follow the manual.

I will check tonight, thanks for the advice, do you know if the ign
switch may be cutting out with power and is the stall switch where the
lanyard is?

Could be,Bob.
use a test light and see if you have powere going to the coil with the
key on. Also, the stall switch in the I/O system can be giving you
problems.
