Different perspectives
Saturday, I was talking to a couple who had just bought a sailboat as
was another guy I vaguely know. The couple asked what we thought of
Cedar Key, FL (on the Florida Big Bend West Coast). He replied that
Cedar Key was really awful and nobody should go there. I was shocked
because my family had a wonderful time at Cedar Key, so much so that we
kept our boat there for a month and went abck and forth from
Tallahassee to be there.
Yes, it has no facilities and simply getting into the slip was an
adventure requiring high tide, multiple people hanging on the shrouds
and digging a furrow through the mud but it was worth it. We ended
hanging out at a biker bar, getting to know most of the local
characters and socializing with "poor boat trash" types instead of
expensive boat owners and my kids beg to go back.
I understand that poor weather and poor holding might have made the
other guys experience different but this also makes me realize that
people seem to have vastly different perspectives on what makes a trip
good or bad.
