Default Can't reinstall outdrive (alpha I gen II) - First timer needs tip..

The shifter is lined up like the mercruise book shows.. how does the engine
become unaligned? I can see the ujoint shaft move if i put a little
resistance on the shaft. I'll get some rest and try again in th emorning..

thanks for the help........

I hope you got the shifter lined up right when you put the drive halves
together. When the shift shaft on the drive is fore and aft the drive
should be in forward gear. If you move the prop CCW you should see the
ujoint shaft move with it. When you do this exercise with the drive off
you will see how much force it takes to turn the u-joint shaft with the
prop. It really doesn't take a lot. While you have the drive off you ought
to check the engine alignment. Also make sure you have the o rings in the
right places, and grease them along with the splines. The gimbal bearing
could be cocked a little. The engine alignment tool would straighten it
for you.

I have the gear shifter in FORWARD, not all the way just enough to
engage.. and it seems as if the splines went together. I tried to rotate
the prop CCW but it wouldn't budge.. And i wasn't to the point where the
shift coupler connects...

How hard should i attempt to turn the prop? Should I put some weight
behind it? I don't want to strip or grind anything...

The gear shifter must also be in forward. Try stepping on the left side
of the prop while moving the drive into position. This will help to
engage the splines.

I have a 94' mercruise v8 5.7 liter w/ alpha i gen2 drive. I had to
remove it to fix a leak in the gear lube. Upon attempting to reinstall
the drive I am having problems getting it all the way in. I can get it
as far as the beginnings of the bolts but then it doesn't go any
further.. I have the assistance of 2 other people lifting and guiding..
the shift shafts are aligned, but it doesn't seem to get to the point
where the would go together. The drive is engaged in the FORWARD
position....

I know there has to be a trick of the trade to do this... any help is
greatly appreciated..

Thanks!!
