He used a shotgun.

According to our chief of police, he had two weapons. A "pistol
grip"
shotgun and an "assault rifle."

A "pistol grip" is a choice by the shooter which enables the
ability to
bring your arm down tighter to the body to better control the
weapon.

What is the definition of an "assualt rifle?"

You would need to ask our Chief of Police what he had in mind when
he
used the term.

Just as I suspected, there is no legal definition of an assualt rifle.

Assault Rifle: A military rifle intended purely for one-man operation
and equipped to provide both semiautomatic or full-automatic fire by
means of a selector switch or other fire-control device. They are
chambered for an intermediate cartridge, have barrels under 20 inches,
make extensive use of plastics and stampings, use gas operation and
locked breeches, have magazine capacities of 20 to 30 rounds, weigh
from six to 10 pounds and are quite compact.

And used for KILLING PEOPLE.

That depends upon who is at operating end of the weapon.
