I read that they are sometimes eaten with salt.

This reminded me of something that my grandmother did - mainly, eat a
salted apple. It's actually pretty good tasting as I remember it.

Anybody remember grandparents doing that?

No. But my grandmother used to put sugar in her beer. Does anyone else
rememeber their grandmother sugaring their beer?

Some of the regulars at the local taverns used to sprinkle a dash of
salt in their draft beer and sharply rap the glass rim with the salt
shaker. This would **** off the waiters but seemed to take away a bit
of the bitterness. I didn't like doing it.
