Not foolish at all!

The fact of the matter is, Many Cruising Boats are doing away with
Topping Lifts and even BACK STAYS to increase Leech ( Hunter; a
production vessel comes to mind)

A Lazy Jack system that originates at the spreaders and can be stored on
the back side of the mast, when the Main is deployed, sure reduces
weight aloft and reduces windage close to 100%. It also reduces wear on
the Main, due to rigging 100%

Plus! My Jacks act as a topping lift when deployed and can be left in
place after the Main is Reefed. Simply ease to let the Main set its'
camber.

Also, they are cheaper and easier to replace and can be used with ANY
Standard Main.

A Cheaper, standard sail cover is all that is necessary. The need for
Sail Ties are also eliminated, and the covered main is completely inside
the Jacks, with only the inexpensive sail cover to suffer wear during
furling.

Dave, these are reasons I use LAZY JACKS.
