BOILED PEANUTS IN A CAN........ABOMINATION.........Redneck JIHAD.
Boiled (pronounced "Bold") peanuts should only be bought alongside some
country road from a guy with a name like "Bubba the Cajun" who dishes
em up from a large aluminum kettle heated from a nearby LPG tank. They
are a true delicacy and can be eaten two ways. Either shell them like
regular "Parched" peanuts or eat em shell and all the way I do. Eat em
hot. Beverage of choice is RC cola.

My brother married a yankee from NJ who decided to try to please him
when he told her he liked boiled peanuts. When he came home, she was
boiling those dry roasted peanuts to death and she still cant figger
why we all think its funny.

My yankee wife will not allow a boiled peanut stand to pass without
stopping to buy some and my kids all love em.

If you like boiled peanuts, cane syrup, blackeyed peas and collards,
you might fit in down here.

I agree about the roadside peanuts. mmm, mmm, good. Last time we drove
around the south, (Georgia and the Carolinas) we ran across a guy just
exactly like you describe.
Big ol' roadside kettle, hand-lettered sign that read Hot Peanuts Fresh
Dailey, and you name it. We got a paper bag full for a few bucks, and
while they were best hot we snacked on boiled peanuts for the next
couple of days.

Collards, you bet. You guys got cilantro down there? Collards and
cilantro would make a darn tasty salad.

But how the heck could anybody mention southern cooking without a nod
to Moe, as in
Mo(e) Lasses. The dark stuff, with Brer Rabbit on the bottle....yeah,
pour that on a pot of beans with some bacon, ham hocks, a hint of
onion, and some Tabasco sauce. Serve with copious amounts of sippin'
whiskey. You wind up with all three food groups represented- sugar, fat
and alcohol. Doesn't get much better than that. (Years ago, I took
first place in a yacht club's annual cook off with just such a pork 'n
bean concoction. Poured a half bottle of Crown Royal into the pot as
well- and the other half of the bottle went into the chef. Cooked
almost all day. When the committee told me I had beat the other 20 or
so entries and asked for the recipe, I hiccuped a bit and said
"Reschipee? I don't need no stinkin' reschipee!")

I can attest, from experience, that a half can of John's peanuts,
microwaved in their own brine for about two mintes, and scarfed down
while still almost too hot to shuck are mighty darn tasty. Whoever bet
I was going to puke....you lost. :-)
