YES YES YESS on this paragraph: "Now please elaborate as to why you
are squeamish about sailing with yourhusband... other than that he is a
New Yorker and thus genetically unable tohandle any vessel properly. Is he
prone to yelling, tantrums and blaming youfor his inability and lack of
confidence? Does he lack the ability toinstil in you a confidence and
comfort while on a vessel?"
Wish I had a Bobsprit but I don't, I have a rugby player, does that tell
you anything? lucky Suzanne! where do they sail from?
Well Dianne,
I sail a Nordica 30 from Prospect Bay in Nova Scotia. Rules on my vessel are
implicit... there is no yelling, the Captain is responsible for the orderly
progress and operations on the vessel. All quests and crew are to be relaxed
and enjoying themselves at all times. If a screw up occurs.. it is my
fault.... nobody else's. I am confident of my abilities and those of my
vessel. It irritates me when I see some clod screaming at his wife because
he lacks the abilities to correctly approach and position his boat to a
dock. I discuss where and what we are doing underway with the crew so
everyone is on the same playing field. If a crew member blows a hoist or
tack.... it's a chance to laugh it off and try it again. That's how you
learn.
I make a sincere effort to insure my crew is intoxicated, relaxed and the
only demands I make is that when my beer alarm sounds... crew will
immediately procure a re-supply.
That being said.... I suggest you get as many of your girlfriends together
and request your husband take you all out for a sail. This is called a "Hen
Frigate"... which is when a Captain allows a female to effect the orderly
progress of the vessel. This tactic has many benefits.. he is out-numbered,
he must be on his best behaviour, he will be forced to endure girl talk, he
will unknowingly be sensitized, he will be unable to turn you down since the
benefits to male status from having an all female crew is coveted. Do these
"Hen Frigate" cruises a few times... as his status among the males increases
he will gain confidence and be less prone to bursts of inconfidence.
I hope this helps.... :-)
