Default quick car rack question......

tor wrote:
Hi,

I have been reading and reading in this group and elsewhere for info,
but I still need some clarification regarding exactly which rack to buy
for my 1992 honda accord station wagon. (canoes)

I walked out to the car and peeled up the plastic strip on the roof and
found threaded stubs sticking up where a rack would mount.

How many threaded inserts were there? It seems that if there were
several of these per side, that it's likely that these would be for
mounting tracks not towers... Tracks are the channels into which the
yakima towers would mount that are similar to the many tracks that are
used to support factory mounted roof racks. In which case you would
need to either find original Honda tracks or buy the generic yakima
ones, and then drill them to match the spacing of the inserts on your roof.

to see what I mean, follow Products: Rack Systems: Permanent. Then
click on Tracks.

FWIW, my brother, who used to work in a windsurfing shop, used to
install these regularly on cutomer vehicles using stainless steel sheet
metal screws. They would put a screw like every six inches. If your
pilot hole is the correct size, this would be a very strong, reliable
system.

I desire to purchase a used rack, will any yakima or thule rack that is
"non-gutter" work? If not, which ones in particular? I think I will
then need to purchase the correct honda kit for it, yes?

Some one in this group did not use an extender kit for their honda
station wagon rack and their boats came flew off. What is the extender
kit?

Would something like the rack below work?:

Thanks! I would feel weird asking a Yakima rep when I plan to buy it
used.

Sincerely, Tor

OK, maybe not so quick of a question.
