Default Taiwanese pipe boat?

Hi all - I was watching a documentary on hurricane chasers a while back
and one of the segments was shot on the coast of a far-eastern country,
I think it was Taiwan. In one shot, it showed a harbour with *lots* of
boats of a type I hadn't seen before. From the side they had a
pronounced dory (as in Wilson Flyer type, umm, a bisected elongated
teardrop?) shape and appeared to be made from lengths of pipe. The
nearest thing I can find to them are Taiwanese 'tray boats', like this:

However, the ones I saw looked pretty modern and had some superstructure
on deck, as well as more pronounced curves (though roughly the same kind
of shape as the one above). I get the impression that the 'pipes' were
too big for bamboo, more like plastic sewage piping. Anyone have any
info on how they are built (if I wasn't just hallucinating) or some
pictures?

Cheers

Andy
