I am restoring a 15 foot speed boat of maybe 50s vintage.
It has a ply deck that looks like a laid deck and it has rotted.
I am replacing the ply decls but am not sure how the markings were done
to imitate a laid deck.
The grooves seem to be about 2 mm deep and about 2 mm wide and are black
in color.
Can any one assist a novice on how to do a ply deck that looks like a
laid deck ?

I realize the importance of being authentic when undergoing a restoration
project, but you might want to consider laying a solid wood deck.
It would be easier than fabricating a mock laid deck and it would last far
longer. My business is manufacturing teak decks, but you will want to use
a pseudo mahogany like Marenti or Luan. To lay a solid deck cut strips 1/8"
or 3/16" thick by 1- 5/8" wide. If you buy a normal flat sawn piece of
Phillipine mahogany the 1-5/8" side will be vertical grain. Simply glue the
strips of mahogany on to the subdeck and hold in place with wood screws and
big washers until the glue is set. These screws will also act as spacers
leaving a 3/16" gap between each mahogany strip in which you will later fill
with white Sikaflex caulking.
