I suggested a brief "test" in 2000. Both major candidates would appear
on a news program and be handed a page chosen at random from any of the
many Dickens' novels. Each without practice would have to read the page
aloud.

The results of the rest would be readily apparent.

No, actually, it would prove the person is an accomplished reader, a
skill necessary for a modern political leader. You certainly would not
want a president lacking in reading ability, or who did not like to read.
