There is an allen set screw in the control and another in the skeg.
Loosen the one in the control, then pull the skeg down and out of the
boat, along with the cable. Loosen the set screw in the skeg and pull
the cable out. Take it to a local marine supplier and buy two sections
1x19 stainless cable (NOT 7x19) of the same diameter or slightly smaller
(the second one is a spare). The stock cable should be either a 1/8" or
3/32". Before you install the new cable, it helps to taper the end
that's going to be fed into the housing using a grinding wheel on Dremel
tool, a bench grinder or a file. It's not mandatory, but it will make it
easier to feed it through at the control end. The assembly procedure is
the reverse of the disassembly procedure.

It's actually an easy job that should take no more than 10 minutes if
you have the materials on hand.

Thanks for your info. Before I saw your note, I bought 7x19 wire rope
which would not have worked very well. Once I got the 1x19 it was easy.
