I appreciate you trying to understand the importance of honoring an author's
intellectual property. That is a step in the right direction. The
difference between you cut and pasting a news article and JimH cut and
pasting a joke, is the news article you have cut and pasted have been
protected by a copyright by the author and the publisher of the article.
The joke has not been credited to any author. If you do a Google of the
joke, you will see it is republished 1000's of times, without crediting any
author. Now if "the author" had protected his work with a copyright, he
would be able to sue to either have the work removed from the web sites, or
for restitution from those who illegally republished his work.
This is a step in the right direction.
