History
John Lanigan, Sr., Founder
Mi-Jack Products, Inc.
In 1955 from his home in a south suburb of Chicago, John Lanigan envisioned
a better way. Forty years later the result is a multinational corporation
providing machinery and solutions for the transportation and material
handling industries worldwide.
Early on, Mi-Jack distributed self-propelled rubber tire gantry cranes
(RTG), and focused on the railroads and ports of the United States. As
Mi-Jack pioneered new methods and technologies in intermodal transportation,
other industries soon found the RTG crane equally effective in increasing
productivity.
Mi-Jack expanded its business to providing operating services, and then
distributing construction equipment. In the early 1980's, Mi-Jack purchased
the manufacturing rights to the cranes it had been selling, which helped
open up new national and international markets.
Today Mi-Jack is recognized worldwide as an industry leader and innovator.
Corporate headquarters remain in Hazel Crest, Illinois. In addition, the
company maintains four regional operations headquarters, five sales offices
and over 60 Intermodal Terminals. What was started on the kitchen table now
comprises sixteen divisions and companies.
Mi-Jack's Hazel Crest headquarters is an ISO 9001-certified facility, and
produce Transliftâ and Traveliftâ RTG's, now in use on six continents.
Traveliftâ cranes have capacities ranging from 15 to 325 tons, with
dimensions customized to customer applications.
Mi-Jack Intermodal is the undisputed leader in providing equipment to the
railroad and port intermodal industry.
Mi-Jack has long recognized the importance of the global marketplace.
International sales have grown annually creating a network of 27 dealers
servicing 53 countries. Joint ventures include Terminales Intermodales
Mexicanas in Mexico, the leading privatized intermodal operators in Mexico
and the Panama Canal Railway Company, the rail link between the Atlantic and
Pacific oceans.
Mi-Jack is preparing for the next century too. Mi-Jack Systems and
Technologies division is dedicated to the utilization of the new
technologies that will increase productivity in the transportation industry.
Q-Sales and Leasing is the leading supplier of thermal protection products
in the shipping industry. Technical Services International brings advances
in operations and maintenance practices to customers worldwide, and
TransLoad Services provides transloading of shipments, warehousing and
processing services.
As Mi-Jack continues to grow, its goal will not be forgotten, says Lanigan.
"Our business philosophy is simple. We strive to be the leader in any market
we service and we do that by providing superior products and superior
service." Nor will its roots be lost, he adds. "We treat our old customers
like new ones. If you always give the customer a little more than what they
came for, they tend to come back."
