My friend has a 5 and 1 year old. The swim platform is fantastic for
them. It's also great for dinghy use. No reason not to have it.


My lovely CCA-style boat has a low freeboard alongside the cockpit. My 3
y.o. grandson can easily slip over the side into the dink. And we lift
my 1 y.o. grandson in with ease. Swim platforms are for power boats and
floating docks. g

And for race boats that want a little extra waterline and for protecting
rudders that are proud of the stern. You can lift a 1 y.o. into anything
with ease. The sugar scoop stern (racer)aka swim platform (cruiser) is
here to stay.


Yup, they are. So are Chris Bangle's ugly new BMW auto designs. No
accounting for aesthetic taste these days. Actually I have only one thing
against arytenoid sterns with platforms--they tend to be found on boats with
exaggerated beam carried aft. Most of these boats tend to drag their sterns
horribly. If they did not, I believe they'd all be faster and accelerate
more easily. These sterns are strictly a compromise--hullplan efficiency
traded for comfort and convenience. In their favor they are convenient for
older or less agile people to board from dinghies, and they are a nice place
from which to pee when underway.
