have been a number of DNFs among the other competitors!

Umm, no. Winning the first race of a series is more
important. In fact, when there is a tie, the boat which beat
the other one in the first race is an official determination
in breaking the tie.
If a sailor/boat is really really good, they often have a
big enough lead that they don't even have to sail the last race.
