My neighbor installed the Skymate on his Amel.
He loves it. It emails him daily with the position of his boat (he lives in
TX the boat is currently in NC), the battery voltage and other info. It
also worked fine when the boat was in Costa Rica and then thru the Panama
Canal to FL.

Globalstar - poor coverage in eastern Carib.

Iridium - expensive

SSB/Pactor - expensive and long waits for a connection

Cell phone - can't lose sight of land

--- What would be the best suggestion if starting from scratch.
