Pete Rose spent his life in baseball, you are correct. Pete Rose,
because he spent his life in baseball, knows an awful lot about the
subject, and could EASILY be called an expert, and correctly so.

And Pete Rose was also a big disgrace to baseball. You would follow his
advice?

Merely spending one's life in something does not an "expert" make....

Let me get this straight: The day before his gambling issue exploded in the
press, he knew what he was talking about. But the day after, he didn't? If
Carl Sagan had filmed a show for Nova on Tuesday and was found to be banging
a half dozen Cornell coeds on Thursday, his knowledge of astronomy and
physics become worthless when the story hits the newspapers?

Now I know why I've always liked Carl!
