Agreed....Never saw an early retirement deal that was anything more
than "Get lost, we don't need you, here's some cash."

Nah. I have a friend who worked for a large company for 20+ years. He
was recently offered early retirement. That included full benefits for
a year, over a year of his salary, access to the company gym, and was
immediately hired as a consultant, so that he could finish the project
he was on.
