DNs are a blast to run around in. Haven't done that in years.

I was up at Webster Lake a couple of weeks ago and some of the MA guys
were putting on a show. I was surprized to see that the DN hulls are
pretty much the same as they always have been, but the blades,
stringers, sails and masts are all carbon fiber, surgical steel and
kevlar materials.

Pretty amazing.

We didn't have anything like DN iceboat hulls when I was a kid. The ones
I got to bum rides in were huge, compared to a DN, and held four or five
guys, easily.

You and I are about the same age and I remember those huge boats also.
I also remember the square sided boats with Douglas Fir spars that had
sprung steel under the wood to give the skate spar a really nice
curve. Those had a ride like a Cadillac..

I have in my old time picture collection pictures of "ice ferry's"
that were used in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to run supplies and
what not to ice bound freighters and islands on Lake Superior. They
looked like sail boats with multiple outriggers. They had a really
simple steering system which is interesting - I'll have to scan the
pictures sometime.

Out in the Midwest where I grew up, I have some great memories of my
Uncle Dave's ice boat that we used to take on ice fishing trips - he'd
take us out on Lake Michigan (he lived in Green Bay) to fish in the
lee of the ice bound lake freighters - pretty cool sitting next to
this huge wind break - it got quite balmy even on the coldest days.
