His IP really was not that difficult to figure out and his email was a
working email.

You could have sent email to the fairwinds address, and Dave would have
responded.

No, not really. Apparently his ISP has reconfigured the NNTP servers
and he no longer goes through the same server... if, indeed, it still
exists. So whether he posts from the East Coast or The Great Plains...
his geographical location is no longer immediately obvious (as it was
a couple of years ago).

An email account is easily forged and.....

anybody with a copy of any decent NNTP server can be anybody they
want, posting from anywhere they want... if they are so inclined.
