Let's face facts, boats often have dark interiors and cheap small
portlights. Designers have tried to solve the problem with some
success. Witness three designs that have very bright interiors in the
light of day due to the overhead L-shaped ports.

I've been aboard all three and the light below is much better than
conventional designs. Sure, you have to adjust for the look. The
Feeling 326 is the oddest, but has the brightest interior of all. This
is a huge advantage for the coastal sailor/cruiser. Downside: The ports
are pricey to replace!
