Default 1999 Evinrude 225 fuel flow prob??

I have a 1999 225 Evin. Ficht that has been very reliable
with the exception of two very similar instances. I was coming in
at a good clip from offshore this past Sunday when the engine
started to lose power. I had an almost identical instance 2+ years
ago. No warning bells or diagnostics were indicated.
Boat is a 1999 Parker WA.

The solution then and now was to pump the fuel bulb, and the engine
would run fine. Stop pumping and the engine would start to bog down.
The bulb was not collapsing but it seemed normal.

When the problem occured two years ago I suspected the fuel lift pump
but I couldn't imagine that my pumping the bulb would make
up for a faulty pump. 2 years ago all that I did
was replace the under cowl fuel-filter/h20 separator
and added a larger remote unit. When I removed the filters I dumped
them into a glass container and noted some minor particulate (metallic)
contamination. This time, after about ~30 minutes of manual bulb
pumping the motor stopped its "bogging" and ran fine; good thing
as my hand was starting to get tired and it was getting foggy.

I suspect the particles were Al remnants of the tank installation or
construction.

What would cause these symptoms? Any help to pinpoint the diagnosis?

My suspicions a

Air leak?

More contaminants? Though I doubt they could have clogged the
now present external filter.

Contaminants blocking the anti-siphon check valve? (My most likely culprit?)

Bad bulb?

Between the two instances were ~200 flawless hours on the motor.

Again, the motor is now running beautifully. I plan on again
changing out the filters and the bulb...
