They got wiser, not smarter.

Wisdom is intelligence paired with experience.

Liberals who stay liberal throughout their lives are either dumb or
sheltered. That is why all of those liberal college professors remain as
liberals throughout their lives...because they've never held a real job in
the real world. They're not dumb...but certainly sheltered.
