Perhaps Mr. Polier realized that selling even a rumor to the tabloids was
reprehensible. Maybe there WAS an affair, but the daughter felt (correctly)
that it was nobody's business but hers, and threatened to cut off all
contact with her parents if they said another word about it. Maybe Mrs
Polier told her husband that if he kept talking, and it resulted in their
having to move to Antarctica to find some privacy from the press, she'd
either divorce him or kill him.
