Years ago, I bought a Myers Manx dune buggy. Beautiful chrome rollbar.
Bolted to the fiberglass sides of the body with 5/16" bolts and a small
washer. Totally for looks. Did look good. I built a cage for the
buggy,
did not look as pretty, but did look more functional.

Man..... I hadn't thought of those in years! About 16.5" out of the
middle of a bug frame, a Fiberglas body and viola..... instant fun!
You put your finger on the overall problem. A roll bar/cage is no
stronger than the supporting member... whether sheet metal or
Fiberglas...

Even more years ago, I race a 1964 Corvette coupe in SCCA B Production.
Took it to the Georgetown Hill climb. Race up a closed off public road near
where gold was discovered in California. I lost control on some pea gravel
and went off a steep hill. As I steered it as much as I could to miss trees
and building size boulders, I was very happy I had gone from the minimum
required roll bar to a full cage. Luckily I missed all the trees and
boulders and only had a broke trailing arm after being winched back up the
hill.
