Herb doesn't do just broadcasting. He will want you to talk to him.
So a receiver wouldn't work for that.

Also in an emergency a receiver will do you no good.

I wouldn't save money that way.

Thanks for your advice Rosalie. My question wasn't "Should I get a SSB
receiver?" or "Will a receiver help me in an emergency?"

My question still stands for anyone that would be so kind to offer any
suggestions.
