Went to San Diego for a week with stops at the daughters in Long Beach
area. On the way down, used the gift certificate for our anniversary to
take a Gondola Ride through the Naples canals. Cheaper than the Gondolas
in Venice, Italy. Very nice little mini cruise, beautiful weather, some
nice vino from our trip to Italy last October. A local wine from the
Cinque Terre made from raisins. Then down to San Diego and some fishing
from the party boats out of Seaforth Landing to the La Jolla kelp beds.
Not much catching. Some Kayak fishing on Mission Bay, little catching
there either. And a couple of kayak trips without fishing on Mission
Bay, with some fish sighted. A lot of boogie boarding the surf of the
Mission Beach area and some bike rides around the area. Watching the Sea
World fireworks at night from the house. Up to the LA area on the way
home to other daughters and a nice fishing trip to Catalina Island
yesterday from Redondo Beach. Lots of catching. Mostly Mackeral and
Calico Bass. A couple of Sheepshead and Kelp fish. Beautiful 80 degree
water and calm seas.
Sounds like a great trip; one I don't get to make nearly as often as I'd
like.
I lived in Pacific Beach for 12 years and I still miss it; but they say
you can't go back. It's definitely not the quiet county I experienced in
the late 70's.
Redondo to Catalina sounds great. Since you were just there, were the
conditions safe for a Sea Ray 185 (18.5 foot open bow)? I'm still trying
to get a handle on the risk:benefit ratio of this "freshwater" boat. I
would love to trailer down and make the passage.
Monday was very safe, well pretty darn safe with a little sense. The swells
were maybe 2'. There was an 18' boat that flipped near us, did not see it,
but a couple of others did. Was near the Pursuit, and they rescued the 2
guys. We were near the boiler rocks, so they probably got too close. I am
going to take my 21' boat down sometime. Be prepared to spend the night at
the island. The afternoon winds in the summer, can get fierce. 10-12'
swells with 2-3' wind waves. You can either wait to later in the evening or
return the next morning. A night in Avalon is not all bad. About 18 years
ago, we were coming back on the Catalina Express to Long Beach and at least
1/2 the crew was seasick. Tables and chairs sliding around the deck.
