These things hit bridges all the time, why wouldn't they hit a boat
docked near the channel?
Well, the "channel" is normally a little more out in the river, not 12
feet from shore. It occurs to me though that most of my boating has
been in the upper portion of a river pool where, by necessity, the
channel is fairly clearly marked and in the mid part of the river
where it has been dredged. We were anchored only a few miles above a
lock & dam so the river was pretty deep all the way across and I guess
the barges tend to operate closer to shore.
