Then why the huge efflux of Cuban refuges under Castro?
Like Elian's father? Not all Cubans are unhappy with life under Castro,
all Cuban refugees are. Not to defend Castro, the Cuban people have an
unacceptable limit to their freedoms, but why are Cubans automatically
political refugees, when Haitians, Mexicans, and other Latinos aren't?
Ahem. What I am about to say is not related to any trips I personally
have made into Cuba in a kinda-sort-of clandestine fashion on
sportfishing trips.
I repeat I have never, ever, bribed, paid a fee or exchanged products
to any Cuban coast patrol for clandestine entry into Cuba for any
reason - including sportfishing.
Got it?
However, according to somebody who I know VERY well, it's a pretty sad
situation in Cuba. The only reason the government still exists is
because it's basically a police state being propped up by sympathetic
governments who want access to cheap sugar and cigars.
The fishing though is spectacular. :)

Tom
