Dick Morris: Bush Approval Rating in 'Free Fall'

Top political strategist Dick Morris sounded the alarm for the White House
Sunday night, warning that President Bush's job approval rating was now in
"free fall."

"I have never seen a president of the United States cave in, in his job
approval like Bush is doing now," Morris told Fox News Channel's Geraldo
Rivera. "He has a serious political problem."

"The polls suggest that he's losing two points a week," said the one-time
Clinton political guru, who has worked for both Democrats and Republicans
but has been generally supportive of Bush in commentaries in the New York
Post and on Fox News.

Morris noted that even when his former client was impeached for lying to a
grand jury and the nation, his job approval rating hovered at around 62
percent.

But Bush's approval numbers, which hovered in the mid-80s immediately after
the Iraq war, have tumbled to 53 percent in the latest Zogby poll, he noted.

Morris chalked Bush's slide up to the one-a-day death count of U.S. soldiers
in Iraq, but said the president is also a victim of his own success in the
war on terrorism.

"You ask people what are the major problems facing America, and only about
eight or nine percent say terrorism," he told Fox, adding, "In a sense we
don't need George Bush anymore."

Morris warned that Bush should forgo his traditional August vacation at the
Crawford ranch and stay focused on events in Washington, D.C., which he lost
control over during his trip to Africa.

Otherwise, said Morris, "when he returns he may have to look for a new job."
