Some waterways still test unsafe

Conditions remain unsafe for swimming on the Licking River north of the Banklick
Creek to the Ohio River and Three Mile creeks. The Kentucky Division of Water
and Division of Public Health Protection have finished reviewing the testing
results from rivers and streams around the state, and have concluded that
swimming advisories in place for several years should continue. Combined sewer
overflows and sanitary sewer overflows have contributed to a high fecal coliform
pollution.

Very recently I was talking to an inspector for the Virginia
Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS). Her husband
had a scratch on his thumb when he went fishing in the South Fork of
the Shenandoah River in Virginia.

He was lifting river stones looking for madtoms to use as bait. Within
a day, his thumb became severely infected. The infection began to
spread quickly and became more systemic as evidenced by fever and loss
of appetite.

His wife took him to the hospital and he was diagnosed with a staph
infection. He was put on antibiotics and his thumb was surgically
opened to the bone to allow the infection to drain. He remained
hospitalized for several days.
