Good old kerosene would probably work also....it will also strip the wax
so
you would have to touch it up afterwards.


I wonder if mineral spirits would work, without messing up the gel coat?

I would not think mineral spirits or kerosene would mess up the gelcoat. If
you get into something with a high solvent content like acetone it would
definitely soften up the gelcoat.
