Peter, I assumed you had a 12 volt system when I suggested
you should use diodes rated at more than two amperes. With a
24 volt system, the diodes could, of course, be rated at
only one ampere, as the formula indicates. A wide safety
margin would nonetheless be prudent.

As Danny posted, you will have additional voltage drops in
the wire in the mast, but these would be present whether you
use the two diode approach or not. In fact, they will
actually be lower with a diode in the circuit.

Plus a bit of voltage drop depending on the height of the mast and gauge
of the wire. Here's an online calculator for 24 VDC:
