Though you can bring the surface /up/ by just using a sufficiency of
contact adhesive that it can fill in the "grain" of the hull. A bit
messy compared to just sticking on a sticker, but it should work and you
shouldn't need anything too fancy, just a general purpose household
adhesive should probably do (it's only holding on paper, so it's not
like it's structural).

caveat: I haven't done this myself so don't take responsibility if it
goes wrong, and won't come and sand failed attempts off your boat!
