Go look thru the fishing newsgroups at other posts by this one and you might
not think it's so nice anymore...

Personally, we used a modified version of kayak plans from Roy Underhills
book You can build a log cabin and everything to go int it, which you can
get at your local library for free, or buy it (I bought it as there is lots
of other neat stuff in there to build).

Instead of canvas, we used nautical cocooning (sp?) material... local boat
shop charged me $4/boat for enough to cover them (we did this as a boy scout
project where each scout built a kayak). Each scout had to bring 12 x 1 gallon
milk containers with lids for flotation... A word of warning about using the
stuff however... if you heat it, it strinks tight and is more suseptable to
tearing, if you don't heat it, it's much stretchier and tears less...

http://www.chicagopaddling.org/lilyak.jpg is a picture of one of our kayaks.

Those paddle ends are schedule 25 PVC heated using a heatgun and flattened...

We were under $25/scout for the kayak project.

Other scout projects we've done (windmill, pvc klondike sled, vinyl gutter
ski's) are at http://www.chicagopaddling.org/scout.html

2 weeks ago, we built catapults with cub scouts... it seemed they all had fun
launching marshmellows... we did foot long catapults with 1x3's and 1x2's, a
few doll rods as stopper and hinge and using a clothspin trigger mechanism.
Being a scout leader has long been the excuse I tell my wife for buying tools:

"But, I need that new router table for our next scout project..." ;-)
